  Introduction to Content Management

Managing your content, either for the Web or your documentation, becomes critical for today's business application. The legacy applications that many organizations use for content creation, management and publishing raise great challenges as you seek to:

  • Ensure portability of your content within other business applications
  • Provide content accuracy
  • Offer different types of content formatting based on user requirements
  • Enable process automation

During this tutorial you will:

  • Discover the different types of content management systems
  • Understand the role of XML within content management
  • Discover the key architecture approaches
  • Discover who the leaders are and will be
  • Learn how to start a project

Content management is no longer an isolated practice. There are many vendors such as Documentum and FileNet who offer content management for the Web and documentation and provide powerful capabilities for document management. Should you go with a vertical approach, or a horizontal one? Gartner forecasts that the majority of content management solution providers will disappear over the next 12 months; who will survive?

Don't miss a unique opportunity to attend this tutorial given by Danny Boulanger, one of Canada's foremost consultants on content management.

  Introduction to Portals

What is a portal? Like many other terms in the computer industry, the portal is now an ambiguous term that loosely defines a common set of functions. In actuality, the portal is a stack that has multiple layers, each associated with providing access to sets of information that might otherwise be very tedious or difficult to access. This session will review the components of the portal stack, cover the use cases for portals, and discuss the requirements for each of these layers in an overall portal solution.

  Introduction to Wireless in XML

The third wave of wireless data is here - using standard, cost-effective technologies to solve real business problems. The third wave is built on Internet and Web-based standards, using interoperable components, sophisticated middleware tools, and a new focus on multi-channel, network-independent, device-independent content delivery.

The third wave "breaks the chains" by using existing wireless networks in innovative ways and by extending services to new networks such as GPRS, UMTS, and 802.11b. This talk will discuss the successes and limitations of wireless business solutions. With this perspective, it will highlight how successful wireless data solutions solve real business problems in a cost-effective way.

The third wave of wireless data is providing the tools and technologies to deliver these solutions today.

  XML and Web services
The notion of integrating applications that can be distributed over the net isn't a new concept, but Web Services provides the means to do it easier, more securely and without the complexity of writing a custom interface for each application. Web services can be thought of as a standards-based "Lego" approach for mixing and matching new or existing application modules, with Java and XML playing critical roles.

Lotus Software from IBM brings people-centric, collaborative technology to the Web Services model -- this is our area of expertise, and this is what extends and differentiates IBM from all the rest. Beverly DeWitt, Senior Manager, New Business Initiatives and Strategy, IBM Lotus software, will educate the audience on the importance of XML and J2EE customers move towards a Web services architecture, how Lotus technology is leveraging XML and other industry standards to simplify the integration of Lotus products into ebusiness solutions.

  Turning legacy into real time.
Part 1

The steps to create an XML format from a legacy system and database, to interface with a web magazine subscription ordering, maintenance and affiliation program system. Using componants of Oracle's XML toolkit, what was going to be an information nightmare blockage was unstopped, and realtime order and change details could interface and flow with a batch stock and order entry and control system.

How to define the problem, how to build the xml templates, and how to use the Oracle database to support XML, including a look to the latest available technology in Oracle 9i, that has brought a successful business strategy to fruition on a robust platform. In the hands-on tutorial, a system design, and use of XML language, will guide the novice to intermediate level to understand how to unlock the simplicity of XML.

Saving Money using XML Portal-based Integration
Part 1

XML-based portals can be effective and efficient information delivery vehicles. They represent a single technology that can be deployed to handle a majority of information delivery needs in a cost effective manner. Combined with an XML-enabled environment, information managers are able to deliver personalized information to knowledge workers with a 10X reduction in time, money, and effort when compared with more traditional approaches.

This business values is delivered virtually without significant programming requirements. Organizations are claiming hundreds of millions of US dollars annually in savings from their XML-based portals as they provide effective information integration and delivery for hundreds of uses.
